We are incredibly proud to announce that Ian has become a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.
He joins a group of just over 5,000 people – not all of whom are advisors – with this elite status in the UK, having completed all the relevant examinations.
It might be interesting for you to know how the qualifications for advisors work.
For someone to be able to provide financial advice they need to be registered with the FCA and be qualified to a Diploma level.
Diploma
This requires 100 ‘credits’ which can be achieved through taking six core exams covering;
- Financial Services Regulations and Ethics
- Investment principles and risk
- Personal taxation
- Pensions and retirement planning
- Financial protection
- Financial planning practice
From here, there are then more specialist exams available. For example, Oliver has 180 credits because he has completed additional training and exams which include advanced mortgage, equity release and Long Term Care.
Advanced Diploma
This requires 290 credits in total with four compulsory 3-hour written exams plus five chosen exams.
This qualification is equal to a Bachelor’s degree.
Chartered Financial Planner Status
A Chartered Financial Planner, which Ian has been for some years, requires completion of the Advanced Diploma and having worked for at least 5 years in Financial Services. Oliver is working towards this status.
Fellowship
This requires an additional 60 credits, which can be achieved by three more specialist exams. This shows an incredibly high level of commitment.
